Are We Desperate For God?

I believe that most Christians today are not desperate for God. We seem to go through life without giving any thought to the one who has created us, loves us, and provides for us. We know He exists but we have no real desire to know Him, or pursue Him.

God desperately longs for us to seek Him. Yet we take for granted all that He has done and passionately pursue other things (idols) that will never satisfy that ceaseless ache in our heart. If you’ve ever had that ceaseless ache in the center of your heart, you know the depths of the word desperate. Desperate people ache for fulfillment. And they’ll go to any lengths to get it. Desperate people are passionate people. Desperation can drive us almost as much as it can drive us crazy. It’s a fine line. But as a Christian it is probably the most worthwhile one we ever walk.

Desperation is the crux of worship. It’s our daily longing to know God more, to know ourselves more, to live lives of fullness that bring honor and glory to God. It’s the core of our being desperately reaching to our Creator, the only one who can reach us where we are and bring us up out of our desperate state.

If we are desperately in love with God and have a deep desire to know Him more, then what lengths will you go to pursue Him?

  1. I have an addictive personality. I am an alcoholic (God’s keep me sober 33 years now) and a food aholic as well. Ever since I got sober I’ve been using the food instead, as my god. Now I’m finally attacking the food issue. What is my point here? As an addictive personality I need to be addicted to something. I think I’m very lucky in this because… I’m beginning to find myself becoming addicted to God! (“Thou shalt have no other gods before me”). PRAISE HIM!!

Deuteronony 5:7-9 “‘You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God,”

  2. Great post! I copied one of your comments to my facebook page. We had our small group here this pm and we talked about worship. I wanted to share your comment as it went along with our conversation perfectly! Thank you!:)
