Spiritual Leadership

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

I recently taught a Leadership Class inside of prison. The ultimate goal of this class was that men would become the spiritual leaders that God had created them to be. To become leaders who glorify God with their lives and that lead other people to glorify God. The above text, Matthew 5:14–16, was one of the key scriptures in our class and is one of the crucial means by which a Christian leader brings other people to glorify God. This text shows that there is an attitude and lifestyle that is so distinctive that when it appears in the arena of fallen humanity, it gives valid evidence that there is a God, and he is a gloriously trustworthy heavenly Father. John Piper defines a spiritual leader as someone who knows where God wants people to be and taking the initiative to use God’s methods to get them there in reliance on God’s power. The class proved to be very helpful to all who participated and afterwards I asked each one of the men to write a report on what they had learned during our study. Below is a summary of what the men put in their reports.

The more intense you are in your faith the more you will become a leader. You must study the Bible and pray every day to be a good leader. – Gordon

Spiritual leaders do not seek the praises of men. They seek to please God. A spiritual leader must be one who can see the glory in every situation. There are many other things it can take to become a spiritual leader but the most important is to have the Lord God as the head of your life. –Calvin

The spiritual condition of a spiritual leader is something I am working to reach. It has not been an easy road but I am doing this all to the glory of God. If we are the leaders that we are supposed to be then we will develop people rather than dictate them. The key is when a person changes in his heart. If they do what you want but don’t change on the inside, then you have failed to take them where God wants them to be. – Bobby

To become a good leader, you have to take the good with the bad and what all that you do needs to point to what really matters. – Darrell

The beginning of spiritual leadership must be in the acknowledgement that we need help. We must trust in the goodness of God for when we have a strong faith in God it inevitably works itself out in our lives. – Harold

A true spiritual leader can be determined by the attention he pays to those he wishes to lead. A spiritual leader strives to bring people’s lives closer to God. –Tony
