“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16
A few weeks back, God convicting me that I should pray more fervently for the lost that is around me each day. I encounter many men on a daily basis who either don’t know Christ, have a warped view of Him or say they believe in Him but live a life that says otherwise. Each conversation or interaction that I have with these men is an opportunity to share Jesus with them. So I would ask you to join with me in prayer for these men.
Here are some of the specific ways you can pray for these incarcerated men who need Christ:
- Pray that the Father would draw them to Christ.
John 6:44 “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him
God is the initiator in salvation. He sent His Son to die for sinners and He is the one who works in people’s hearts to make them receptive to the gospel message. We know that if these men were to come to Christ, God would have to move in their hearts and so I ask you to pray that He would do so.
- Pray that the Spirit would convict them of sin and their need for Christ.
John 16:8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment
The Holy Spirit prepares hearts for the gospel message by bringing conviction. He works to help people see their sin and their helpless condition without Him. Without the work of the Holy Spirit to convict and prepare these men to hear and respond, they will remain unmoved by the message of the gospel.
- Pray for Opportunity to Witness
Col 4:3 “praying at the same time for us as well, that God will open up to us a door for the word … that I may make it clear in the way I ought to speak.”
Even when I am intentional about my desire to witness, I still need an opportunity to do so. Pray that God would give me the opportunity to fully and clearly share the message of salvation and invite men to receive Christ.
- Pray for Boldness in my witness
Eph 6:19-20 “pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, … that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.”
Let’s face it, the biggest reason we don’t witness is fear. When it comes to the men inside of prison, I too have a bit of fear at times that they would reject the message and reject me. Paul himself needed prayer for boldness, so I’m not alone. So as you pray for opportunity, pray also that I would overcome my fears and share the message with boldness.
- Pray for their salvation
1 Tim 2:1, 4 First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all people . . . who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
My desire is that everyone that encounter will come to know Christ as their Lord and Savior. It is not enough merely to be able to share the gospel with them. I want them to respond to the message in repentance and faith. I want them to be saved. When you pray, pray for that these men would be saved.
