The Reality of Hell

In our culture hell has been commercialized by Halloween, scary movies, and through video games. Our culture has become desensitized and conditioned to accept various forms of hell and demons as “entertainment.” This is partly the reason preachers don’t preach about hell. When something is used as entertainment you look silly when you are all serious about it. But, friends we need to take it seriously.

I often hear the terms “Go to Hell” “Hell no” “Hot as hell” in everyday discussions. And since the significance of the word has been culturally watered down, we as believers need to recover the meaning behind this place that God created, called hell. The idea that a person can spend eternity in a place of torment is difficult for the modern day pleasure seeker to imagine. But that does not make hell any less real.

Our favorite scripture John 3:16 “For God so Love…” That’s wonderful but what does God mean when he says, “Shall not perish…” This could not mean physical death because people who believe in Jesus still died. The word perish here means to die eternally. It means to die without hope. It means to die without a Savior! Church attendance or church affiliation is insufficient for salvation. Good works or being a good person is insufficient for salvation. You must be born again through the precious blood of Jesus Christ.

This modern day generation disrespects the reality of Hell but one day every knee will bow to the Lord Jesus Christ even if it bows in hell. In Deuteronomy 32:22 it says, “For a fire is kindled in My anger and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.” We should all recoil at the reality of a place of “eternal fire” but we have been deceived by our arrogance. We hear people say things like, “I might as well, die and go to hell. It can’t be any worse than this I’m going through.” Well friend may I tell you that hell was not created for man. It was created for Satan and his demonic group. Matthew 25:41 says, “The he (Jesus) will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Friends, hell is a place of tremendous pain, sorrow, suffering, and turmoil! Hell is a place of blackness and darkness. There is no mercy there. Mercy is of God. The greatest sorrow of hell is that God will have eternally rejected you. In hell there is not a chance for mercy, and there is no way of escape. Hell is full of all the devils and demons imaginable. Our society has made us to believe that we can be casual about demons. But even on earth demons and devils are not friendly to those they possess. Friends, we should not forget that hell is an “eternal” place. You will not be there for a few years, but eternally!

But friends there is hope through Jesus; in fact He is our only hope! Luke 13:3 says, “No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Our only hope is through repentance and salvation through Jesus alone! Anything else leads to the doorway to hell! As fellow Christians we should be concerned with the fact that many around us are headed to hell. What are we going do? I suggest we get busy and share the gospel with them. Let us be as passionate about seeing men saved as Charles Spurgeon was when he said, “If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped around their knees. If hell must be filled let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let no one go unwarned or unprayed for.”
